CHAPTER 10

The next day came, and my mother and I made our trek down to Main Street to set up our table and get ready. It didn’t seem possible that the second day of the massive sale would be even hotter than the first day had been, but surprisingly, it was.

“I don’t know how long I’m going to be out here with you today,” my mother asserted as she pulled some bags of coffee from a box and set them up in rows on the top of our table.

“Well, to be honest with you, I don’t know how long I’m going to be out here either. Yesterday, we only brought in about a hundred dollars on the coffee. It was a good start to things, and it seems like these will definitely be something I start selling inside the cafe, but I don’t really have the desire to sit out here for hours in this heat to make another hundred dollars.”

Just as I’d finished my sentence, Jerry approached our table and responded to my comment. “A hundred dollars,” he grinned. “Well, maybe you have the wrong end of the street. I sold over seven hundred dollars worth of my coffee right down there.” He turned and pointed at his table.

I raised an eyebrow.

My mother found her fire. “How in the world did you pull that off?” She asked. “Your bags are about as plain as they come, and the last time I saw you yesterday, you were picking on one of the town’s most beloved women. I don’t buy it. And quite frankly, I don’t think many other people did either.”

“Roberta,” he scoffed. “I’m surprised by you lately. The other night, you didn’t want to finish our movie, and then yesterday you chastised me for my genuine concern over a woman suffering from dementia, and now, you’re calling me a liar because I had a far better day selling coffee than your little girl. That all seems so beneath you.”

“You expect me to believe that you sold seven hundred dollars worth of coffee at the south end of Main Street with plain white bags and no branding whatsoever? Did you buy them all yourself?”

He put his hand on his heart and took a stiff step backward, acting as though he’d been shot by a gun rather than insulted by my mother.

“For your information, I didn’t buy a single bag on my own. There were quite a few out-of-towners who were looking to try out some new coffee while they were camping. A few wanted something they could enjoy on their boats.” He took a quick glance around to make sure that no one was within earshot of what he was preparing to say, and then he looked at me. “I wasn’t going to tell you this, but all of them said they’d been to your cafe and thought it was the absolute dregs.”

“Get the heck out of here; you forked tongue liar!” My mother shouted.

She was so loud about it
